The eccentric cone mechanism is the core of what makes this kit different from a basic yoke-and-bar set. As the cone rotates off-centre through the copper tube, it works the metal gradually rather than forcing it.
This is what prevents splitting and produces a smooth, crack-free flare instead of a jagged one. A good flare needs to be smooth and symmetrical; a cracked or uneven flare won't seal no matter how tight the fitting is.

Flaring and swaging solve different problems, and it's worth knowing which this kit is for. Flaring forms a cone-shaped end on the tube so it seats against a flare nut and fitting.
The seal comes from metal-to-metal contact, not thread tape or sealant, which is why getting an accurate flare matters more than how tight you wind the nut. Swaging instead expands one end of a tube so a second length of the same-diameter tube pushes directly into it, creating a push-fit joint without a separate fitting.
This kit is built for flaring. If a job calls for swaged, fitting-free push connections, a dedicated swaging kit or swage head is the right tool for that instead.
