Mounting an outdoor air conditioning unit on a bracket keeps it off the ground, clear of debris and flooding, and frees up space, but only if you choose the right bracket. The two things that decide it are how heavy your outdoor unit is, and where you are mounting it. This guide walks through both, explains the different bracket types, and helps you pick the one that suits your install.

Two questions decide your bracket

Before looking at types, answer these two:

1. How heavy is the outdoor unit? Every bracket has a load rating. As a rule, choose one rated comfortably above your unit's weight, ideally around twice it, so there is a safe margin. Sizing up is always the safer call.

2. Where is it being mounted? A solid wall, a sloping roof, a window, or a spot with no support underneath all call for a different bracket. And in coastal or corrosive environments, the material matters as much as the shape.

Choosing by weight: standard wall brackets

For a standard solid wall, the choice comes down to the load rating that matches your unit:

• 450mm medium duty (around 150kg): suits smaller, lighter outdoor units.

• 450mm heavy duty (around 200kg): suits mid-size units, with more margin.

• 550mm heavy duty (around 250kg): suits larger units, generally those above 5kW.

Match the rating to your unit's weight, allow headroom, and check the bracket arms suit the unit's mounting foot spacing. Most quality wall brackets include adjustable arms and rubber anti-vibration pads to cut noise transfer into the wall.

Choosing by position: specialist brackets

Sloping roof mounting bracket

A sloping roof bracket is designed to hold an outdoor unit level on a pitched roof. Trying to adapt a standard wall bracket to a roof pitch is awkward and less safe, so a purpose-made roof bracket is the right tool where a roof mount is needed.

Window air conditioner bracket

A window bracket supports a unit at a window opening, useful where wall or ground mounting is not practical. It is built for that specific position rather than a general-purpose wall fixing.

Cantilever bracket

A cantilever bracket holds the unit on arms projecting out from the wall, carrying the weight without a support leg beneath. It suits spots where there is nothing below the unit to support it, for example a high wall position with no ledge.

Choosing by environment: stainless steel brackets

In coastal areas, or anywhere exposed to salt air or corrosive conditions, material matters more than anything. Standard powder-coated steel can begin to rust much sooner near the coast, whereas stainless steel resists corrosion far better over the long term.
