Step-by-Step Guide: How to Clean and Maintain Your Air Conditioner

Step 1: Turn Off the Air Conditioner

Before cleaning, switch off the air conditioner and isolate its electrical supply according to the manufacturer's safety instructions.

Ensure the unit is fully powered down before opening any accessible covers or removing washable filters.

Step 2: Prepare the Cleaning Area

For indoor wall-mounted split system air conditioners, position a compatible air conditioner cleaning cover around the indoor unit.

Use the cleaning cover support plate kit to help position and secure the cover where compatible. Arrange a suitable drainage hose and wastewater collection container to prevent dirty water from reaching walls, floors or furniture.

Protect nearby electrical components and surrounding surfaces from water exposure.

Step 3: Remove and Clean the Air Filters

Carefully remove the air conditioner's washable filters according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  • Remove loose dust using a soft brush or vacuum cleaner.

  • Wash reusable filters with water if permitted by the manufacturer.

  • Allow filters to dry completely before reinstalling.

  • Replace damaged or non-washable filters when required.

Clean filters help maintain airflow and reduce dust accumulation inside the air conditioning system.

Step 4: Apply a Suitable AC Coil Cleaner

For compatible indoor evaporator coils, apply Viper Evap+ Coil Cleaner according to its product label and technical instructions.

Allow the cleaning solution to work for the recommended contact time.

Important: Do not mix different cleaning chemicals or apply both products together unless their manufacturers explicitly permit it.

Step 5: Rinse the Evaporator Coil Where Required

If the selected cleaner requires rinsing, a trained technician can use the portable cleaning machine with an appropriately controlled, low-pressure spray.

  • Follow the cleaning chemical's rinsing instructions.

  • Avoid bending delicate aluminium coil fins.

  • Keep water away from electrical components, motors and control boards.

  • Ensure wastewater is collected and directed safely.

Never use a high-pressure jet on delicate evaporator coils. Only use the portable washer if its operating pressure and spray pattern are suitable for the specific air conditioner.

Step 6: Inspect the Condensate Drainage System

Check the air conditioner drain tray and condensate drain hose for visible dirt, algae or blockages.

Ensure wastewater can flow freely through the drainage system without leaking or backing up.

For installations requiring replacement drainage materials, Star Sparky also supplies 50m air conditioner condensate drain hoses and other HVAC installation accessories.

Step 7: Reassemble and Test the Air Conditioner

Once the cleaned components are dry and correctly reinstalled:

  • Remove the cleaning cover and equipment.

  • Reinstall the air filters and accessible covers.

  • Ensure no water remains near electrical components.

  • Restore power only when the unit is safe to operate.

  • Check for normal airflow, cooling operation and condensate drainage.

For professional maintenance, technicians should also inspect the system for unusual noises, vibration and other signs of operational problems.
